Dr. Roger M. Smith

Martinez, GA – Dr. Roger M. Smith, beloved father, husband and ophthalmologist in Augusta, Georgia, passed away peacefully at the age of 71. He spent his final days at home, surrounded by his loved ones. Roger was a courageous, compassionate, and loving person, whose energy was not diminished despite a decades-long battle with cancer.

Roger and his siblings Jimmy, Margo and Melanie were raised in Springfield, MA by their parents Elsie and James Smith. The Smith Family has a proud legacy in the medical field, and Roger devoted himself to continuing this tradition. For over 40 years, he provided exceptional care to his patients. He earned his medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine in 1976, where he was honored by being inducted into the medical honor society Alpha Omega Alpha. He completed his residency in Ophthalmology at Howard University Hospital. Roger became known for his expertise in diagnosing and treating complex eye conditions. Roger’s excellence as a physician and his empathic bedside manner inspired two of his children to join the medical field.

Beyond his medical career, Roger was always eager to share his insights on current affairs. He was also an avid Formula One fan. After Roger retired in 2018, he and his wife Millie enjoyed spending time at home with their dogs, traveling to the beach and California wine country, and visiting his children and grandchildren in the Baltimore/D.C. area.

Roger is survived by his loving wife, Millie Smith; the mother of his children Denise Smith; his daughter, Amena, and son-in-law Justin Fine; his sons, Marcus and Michael Smith; and two cherished granddaughters, Olivia and Edith Fine. He will deeply be missed by his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched through his dedication and care.

The family will receive friends Saturday, October 12, 2024, from 2:00 until 4:00 P.M. at Thomas Poteet & Son, Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors, 214 Davis Rd., Augusta, GA 30907.
