Dr. Ronny Joe Sayers
Augusta, GA – Entered into the arms of his Lord and Savior, Sunday, May 25, 2014, Dr. Ronny Joe Sayers, 74, husband of Carol S. Sayers, whom he married in 1962.
Dr. Sayers was born in Clearfield, PA and graduated from Clearfield High School in 1957. During high school, he received the Andrew Carnegie Bronze Medal Award for his heroic effort in trying to save a boy from drowning. Dr. Sayers graduated from the USMA at West Point in 1962 as a 2nd LT. He continued on to attend Infantry, Airborne and Ranger Schools and became a member of the 101st Airborne Division.
Dr. Sayers went on to graduate from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1970 and completed his internship and residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. In 1974, he was assigned to Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center at Fort Gordon as the Chief of Pathology.
After 20 years of service, Dr. Sayers retired from the Army and opened Sardis Medical Center in Sardis, GA where he served the Sardis community for over 28 years as a dedicated physician. He retired again in June, 2012.
Dr. Sayers was an active member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and the Georgia-Lina Emmaus Community. He was an avid stamp collector and lover of orchids.
Family members include children: Douglas Sayers, Tonya Sayers and LeighAnn Chambley (John); grandchildren: John “Chip” Chambley (Elizabeth), Sarah Kate Chambley, Benjamin Sayers and Ryan Sayers; great-grandchildren: Harrison Chambley; brother-in-law: Daniel Strickland (Lorraine); and nephew: Cameron Strickland. He is preceded in death by his parents: Eugene and Martha Sayers; brother: Wesley Sayers.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. at Aldersgate United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Jim Higgins and Rev. Grady Mosley officiating. Following the memorial service, the family will receive friends in the Family Life Center.
