Dr. Shirley A. George
Augusta, GA – Dr. Shirley Ann George peacefully passed away February 28, 2014. Born in Buffalo, New York in 1929, she finished her nursing degree there, her Masters degree at Boston University and her doctorate at Indiana University in 1980.
Dr. George devoted her life to caring for the poor and indigent in Kansas City, Indianapolis and after 1982, at the Medical College of Georgia’s School of Nursing, Department of Community Health. She and Dr. Jere Chambers led the Community Health Street Surveys in 1989 to document Augusta, Georgia’s homeless population. Data collected permitted them to devise strategies to overcome health access issues, coordinate care and mental health support. Much of their foundational work continues to be carried out in this area today through churches, foundations and agencies.
A lifelong devout Roman Catholic, Shirley was a member of St. Mary on the Hill Church and a board member of Catholic Social Services. In 1991 she spearheaded the formation of an offshoot--Coordinated Health Services (now St. Vincent de Paul Health Care Clinic), an agency that leveraged area churches, hospitals and mental health facilities to support homeless patients. She lobbied in Atlanta and Washington for funds to launch programs. In 1998 the 16-bed Good Samaritan Respite Center was constructed at 1384 Broad Street to provide post-acute care for homeless patients discharged from local hospitals.
In addition, Dr. George delivered many talks worldwide on her work building support networks for the less fortunate. She enjoyed her travels, meeting new friends in far-off cities, gardening and serving on various Church committees. In 2004 she was inducted into the Secular Franciscans.
Special recognition and gratitude goes to her loyal nurse, Mrs. Linda Graham, who cared for Dr. George from 2006 until her death.
A memorial mass will be Thursday, March 13, 2014, 11:00 A.M. at St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church, 1420 Monte Sano Avenue, Augusta, with Fr. Gerald Ragan as celebrant. A Franciscan Wake will precede the memorial mass beginning at 10:00 A.M. Interment will be at a later date in Clarence, New York.
