Dr. Solomon K. Brown
Augusta, GA - Dr. Solomon Kline Brown passed away July 9, 2015 in Matthews, North Carolina.
Known to family and friends as "Brewser"- a nickname from his father - he was born in West Palm Beach, Florida on March 7, 1926. His father passed away when he was seven years old, and Brewser was raised by his mother, Marian Avrett Brown, in Brunswick, Georgia and by his uncles in Davisboro and Milledgeville, Georgia. He graduated from high school at Glynn Academy in Brunswick, GA in 1944 and immediately joined the Army Air Corps. He was awaiting orders to Japan when World War II ended. He was honorably discharged in 1945 and volunteered to serve in Korea and Vietnam but was not called. Brewser completed his undergraduate pre-medical studies at Emory University in three years and earned his M.D. from the Medical College of Georgia in 1952. He studied briefly at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN where he published a research paper with Dr. W.A. Meeker. He completed his internship and residency at Philadelphia General Hospital and returned to Augusta to begin his medical practice. He worked as a Radiologist in the CSRA for nearly 50 years, working primarily in Thomson, Washington, Millen, Sylvania and Swainsboro, Georgia. Dr. Brown was a generous Christian who supported a myriad of ministries in the United States and throughout the world. For many years he was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Augusta, GA where he taught Sunday school, and later the Grace Fellowship Church in Augusta. He served as a Boy Scout Troop Leader in the late 1960s. In the 1970s and 1980s Dr. Brown visited prison inmates to share his faith and bring small gifts. Brewser enjoyed reading, hunting, and classical music and was also an avid photographer.
Dr. Brown was a dedicated husband and father. He was preceded in death by his father Solomon Kline "Brewser" Brown, his mother Marian Avrett Brown, and his sister Elizabeth Brown Carpenter. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ilda Jean Cogan Brown, daughters Carolyn Brown Echols and Marian Brown Ragsdale, a son Stuart Kevin "Brewser" Brown, sons-in-law Randall Leslie Echols, Sr., and James Edmundson Ragsdale, Jr., daughter-in-law Sara Smith Brown, and seven grandchildren; Randall Leslie Echols, Jr., Catherine Cogan Echols, Julia Elizabeth Echols, James Edmundson Ragsdale III, Marshall Solomon Ragsdale, Marguerite Avrett Brown, and Cogan Astin Brown.
The funeral service will be Saturday, July 11, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son officiating.
