Wrens, GA – Ed Smith, 88, husband of Carole Jones Smith, passed away on Sunday, August 7, 2022, after a brief illness, surrounded by his family.
The son of Cecil Ivy Smith and Maude Palmer Smith, Ed (or Palmer, as he was known then) was raised in Mitchell County, Georgia. After graduating from high school in Pelham, he served four years in the United States Air Force. Shortly after completing his military service, he moved to Augusta, where he met Frances Morgan Smith. The couple married and had two children together. Ed worked at Pratt-Dudley Builders Supply in Augusta for over 35 years, and he was also a longtime active member of National Hills Baptist Church, where he faithfully served in many capacities, including Sunday school teacher and deacon. Following Frances’ death, Ed met Carole Jones Smith at the church and they married and blended their families. After his retirement, Ed and Carole moved to Athens and Statesboro before settling in Wrens, Georgia.
Ed was preceded in death by his first wife and his parents. He is survived by his current wife of 39 years; his children, Scott Smith (Vivian), Lisa Smith, and George Raley (Charlotte); his grandchildren, Eric Smith (Silvia), Brinson Raley, Brian King, and Michael King (Jennifer); and his great grandchildren, Destiny King, Kaleigh King, Kinsley King, and Kayden King.
Ed had a sweet spirit and sense of humor that endeared him to everyone who knew him. He is deeply loved and will be dearly missed. His family and friends are comforted by many precious memories and the knowledge that he is at peace in the presence of his Savior.
The funeral service will be held Thursday, August 11, 2022, at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Chip White, Rev. Scott Wilkes, and Dr. Gary Wilkes officiating. Interment will follow in Westover Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Thursday, one hour prior to the service.
