Mr. Edward R. Elsey Jr., “Eddie” beloved husband of Cathy Woodward Elsey was called to stand with the Lord, Thursday, December 17, 2009 after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 19, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity on the Hill United Methodist Church, with Reverend Gregg Hatfield and Reverend Dan Brown officiating. Interment will follow at Westover Memorial Park.

Eddie Elsey will not be defined by the disease Alzheimer’s, but rather by the things he loved and the life he lived. He was a member of Trinity-on-the-Hill United Methodist Church where he worshiped our Lord every Sunday for as long as he was able. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed baseball, golf, motorcycles, loved long walks on the beach, and he was an avid Georgia Bulldog Fan.

Eddie was born in Augusta, Ga. on September 30, 1948. He attended the Academy of Richmond County, graduating in 1966. He played baseball for ARC, and The American Legion Baseball League. He was a baseball coach for the Pee Wee Baseball teams founded by Dr. Daniel Sullivan in association with the Richmond County Recreation Department. Mr. Elsey was an avid baseball fan and collector of the New York Yankees. He was self proclaimed as the “The Biggest New York Yankee Fan South of the Mason Dixon Line”, of the 50’s & 60’s with his main focus on the Maris & Mantle era, especially the summer of 61. His game room at home bares the name “Yankee Stadium South” where many games were enjoyed with family and friends.

Eddie was a past member of West Lake Country Club, Woodside Plantation Country Club, The Augusta Jaycees, The Master City Riders, The American Motorcycle Association, and the American Legion Post 63. He served in the Georgia Army National Guard.

Eddie was the owner of Honda-Yamaha of Augusta, before selling the motorcycle dealership in May of 1998.

In addition to his loving wife Cathy, Mr. Elsey is survived by his parents: Mr. Edward R. Elsey, Sr. and Sue Clark Elsey; son: Larry Elsey and his wife Jennifer and five children, Frank Kuhlke, Ellen Kuhlke, Scott Elsey, Finn Elsey, Duncan Elsey, all of Martinez, son: Grant Lawson Elsey of Augusta and two children Savannah Jo Elsey, and Cassidy Elsey of Augusta, daughter: Louise Elsey Braden and her husband Virgil and two children, Logan Braden and Lindy Braden of Aiken, Daughter: Kelly Lynne Glazner of Evans, Daughter: Brandi Glazner Glass and her husband Jeff and their daughter Emma Catherine Glass of Evans, Daughter: Kristy Glazner Lewis and her husband Jeffrey and their daughter Lilly Lewis of Evans, Brother: Harry C. Elsey and his wife Jackie of Augusta, niece: Allison Elsey Jester, nephew: Elliot Scott Elsey .


Pallbearers will be Dr. Roger D. Brown, Millege Murray, Lynn Lewis, John Landis, Herbert Gilstrap, and Elliott Elsey.
