Elaine Draper Pettit
Augusta, GA – Elaine Draper Pettit passed away on June 12, 2012 after a long battle with breast cancer. She was a loving wife, a devoted mother, and a doting grandmother, and she will also be missed by her numerous friends for her sense of humor and her interest in them and their lives. She loved to sew, embroider, knit, and crotchet.
She is survived by her husband of 42 years, M. Edward Pettit, Jr.; her sister, Lin Sabala and her husband, Rocco Sabala; her two children, Victoria Pettit Terry and Jeffrey Charles Pettit and their spouses Christopher Terry and Stacie Pettit; and three grandchildren, Charles Terry, Gavin Pettit, and Rylan Pettit.
Elaine was born in Berkeley, California to Richard and Lorena Draper. Soon afterwards the family moved to Long Island, New York. Four years later they moved to the Long Beach, California area where they remained until she graduated high school. The Drapers then spent three years in The Hague, Netherlands where Elaine and Ed met. Elaine attended college in Germany, California, and Oregon before they married. They moved to Riverside California for three years while Ed attended graduate school and Elaine worked as a bookkeeper. Two years in Kalamazoo, Michigan were followed by two years in Columbia. South Carolina. The family moved to Augusta in 1977 when Augusta College offered Ed a position. They have lived in Augusta since that time.
A memorial service will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church on Monday June 18 at 5:00 pm. The honorary pallbearers will be Elaine’s three best friends, Karen Baker, Diane Neely, and Mary Joe Davis, her sister-in-law, Carole Pettit, and her cousin, Tobi Campanella.
