Eleanor Brady
Evans, GA - On January 20, 2021, after a brave struggle with COVID, Eleanor Thomas Brady was reunited in heaven with her late husband, Col. James Oliver Brady.
She was born April 5, 1924 to Pansy Hartley Thomas and Harry Wilson Thomas, who gave her the nickname ‘Pete’. She was a 1942 graduate of Tubman High School.
She married the love of her life in 1946 after then-Sergeant Brady asked her by telegram to wait for him to return for her from Europe during World War II. Pete returned with her husband to post-war Berlin where she served as a Red Cross Gray Lady, offering comfort to those in need. She came home to the states pregnant in a cargo plane used to transport flour during the Berlin Airlift. Pete accompanied her husband to his other postings and waited for him to return from two additional wars. Otherwise, they were inseparable. They settled in Augusta, but she never lost her love of Germany. Her home showcased her collections of German art and figurines. Pete loved live theater, 1940’s music, and was a voracious reader.
But most of all, she loved her family, including their pets, Lilly and Moonie. She cherished her friends, especially ones she and Jim made during their years at Brandon Wilde. She was an intelligent conversationalist, a witty friend, a wise woman and a loving mother and grandmother. Pete and Jim were lifelong members of the First Presbyterian Church of Augusta, GA, and were married in the Church on May 5, 1946.
Pete is predeceased by her husband, James Brady, her parents, Pansy and Harry Thomas, brothers James Wilson Thomas and Robert Eugene Thomas and her beloved grandson, Jonathan Bice. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Bice (Ron) and son, James Christopher Brady (Becki), grandson Nicholas Brady (Laura) and granddaughter, Kathleen Brady; and, her favorite cousin, DiAnne Pittman; sister-in-law Esther Thomas and nephews Jim and Stewart Thomas.
Her family is deeply appreciative of those who cared for her during her recent illness. Both the staff in Brandon Wilde Pavilion and the University Hospital doctors and nurses were a blessing to Pete and her family.
Due to the ongoing health crisis, a memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. If you wish to make a donation in her memory, the Golden Harvest Food Bank was a charity that she long supported.
