Augusta, GA - Mrs. Elizabeth Benton Lamkin Johnson, 96, widow of the late Joseph Robert Johnson, beloved husband of 60 years, entered into rest on Sunday, September 27, 2015.

Mrs. Johnson, a native Augustan, lived most of her life in Augusta and Columbia County, Georgia and North Augusta, South Carolina. She was an educator for 39 years, having taught at Evans High School, Columbia County 6 years, in Atlanta, Ga. 3 years, at Tubman Junior High 9 years, and served as Director of Educational Media for the Richmond County Board of Education. Mrs. Johnson graduated from North Augusta High School in 1936, from Augusta Junior College and received the A. B. Degree from Wesleyan College; Masters degree in Media Education and a Specialist in education from the University of Georgia.

She was a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School 43 years, taught Bible studies, served as Lay speaker, served as Chairperson of the Administrative Board 1974-1978, church historian; authored two books: Twenty Fifth Anniversary 1949-1974 "Pioneers for God", and Fiftieth Anniversary 1949-1999 "Pioneers for God Still Growing Together With God".

She served as President of the Richmond County Teachers Association 4 years. Mrs. Johnson was a member of the Richmond County Retired Teachers Association, the Georgia Retired Teachers Association, Alpha Delta Kappa Omicron Chapter, and the Dogwood Garden Club.

She is survived by two sons and their wives: Dr. Robert William Johnson (Hazel); Walton Lamkin (Buzzy) Johnson (Dianne); four grandchildren Robert Clifford Johnson (Michelle); Michele Elizabeth Johnson Rigsby (Trey); Dr. Hunter Lamkin Johnson (Jessica); and Dr. Benton Lake Johnson (Elle); and two great grandsons Gaines Taylor Johnson, James Harold Rigsby, IV; and three great granddaughters Blakely Elizabeth Johnson , Elizabeth Hazel Rigsby and Sadie Lamkin Johnson : cousin Hilda Lamkin Davis, niece Marsha Lamkin McKendry (Judd), nephews Col. Claude W. Johnson (Martha Ann), Robert W. Lamkin III (Robin) and William Alexander Lamkin (Judy). She was preceded in death by her parents Robert Walton Lamkin, Sr. and Daisy Elizabeth Lamkin, and her brother Robert Walton Lamkin, Jr.and his wife Evelyn.

The family expresses love and special appreciation to her caretakers, Domonique Elam and Mandy Norman, and the staff at Brandon Wilde.

Funeral services will be held at 11 am, Wednesday, September 30, 2015, at St. Mark United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David Gravitt officiating. Burial will be private.
