Bette met the love of her life, John, when she was five (5) years old and he was eight (8) years old. They married on June 25, 1946 after John returned home from service in World War II. Bette had graduated from Columbia College with a double music major in piano and organ while John was serving his country.

After their marriage Bette maintained the home and children while John finished his education, including degrees from USC, Emory and the University of Montreal. John and Bette moved to Augusta after John graduated from orthodontia school in 1964.
