Elizabeth “Betty” Boardman Bowring
AUGUSTA, Ga. On the evening of Wednesday June 7th, Elizabeth (Betty) Boardman Bowring went peacefully into rest in her home. A lover of life, who once called Martha’s Vineyard home before returning to her beloved Augusta Tante Bet, as she was affectionately known by her nieces and nephews, was truly one of a kind who lived an extraordinary life full of family and friends. Headstrong with a rebellious streak, while in high school Betty managed to break free of restriction imposed upon her by her father Lonnie and slip the confines of the family home on Peachtree Road by escaping off of a second floor balcony to meet a young gentleman suitor. A world traveler with a love of cooking and an ever resilient free spirit described by lifelong friend Bowdre Mays as “a bit of a hellion”, she lived her life her way. She passed in similar fashion leaving this earth a week to the day after her ninetieth birthday in the comfort of the home she loved in Peachtree Place just minutes away from the home she grew up in as a girl her grade school classmates nicknamed “Betty Boop”. Betty was a member of the Sand Hills Garden Club, the Suburban Garden Club, the Augusta Country Club and Saint Paul's Episcopal Church. An avid golfer and one time Augusta Country Club Club Champion, Betty was preceded in death by her parents Alonzo Plumb (Lonnie) Boardman, Sr. and Elizabeth (Lib) Fleming Boardman; her sister and brother Martha Fleming and Alonzo (Bruz) Plumb Boardman, Jr;. and her nephew William Henry Fleming III. She is survived by her nieces Catherine Boardman Fleming, Kathryn Sibley Boardman and Margaret Boardman Copenhaver; her nephew Thomas Porter Fleming and her great niece Catherine Elizabeth Fleming. Her last years were made easier by caregivers Patsy Jenkins, Shirley Clark, Juanita Clark, Patricia Pitts and personal trainer Demetrius Jones. A graveside service will be held Sunday June 11th at 2:00 p.m. in the Summerville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Episcopal Church, 605 Reynolds Street, Augusta, GA 30901.
