In 1936, Betty was born in Union Beach, NJ to Edward and Gertrude Zahn and attended school there and Keyport High School, graduating in 1953. She became the organist and was active in the choir at St. Theresa of Avila Catholic Church after the family moved to the area in 1976.

She was the mother of six children and excelled in the home arts of cooking, baking, sewing, quilting, and crafts. Her skills led her to volunteer in Girl Scouts, First Aid Auxiliary, and various church and school groups.
