Elizabeth G. Garrison
Augusta, GA – Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Gambrell Garrison passed away on Friday, October 16, 2015, at Georgia Regents Medical Center. The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 22, 2015, from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. at Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors, 214 Davis Rd., Augusta, GA 30907. A private graveside service will be held at a later date in Old Silverbrook Cemetery in Anderson, SC.
Mrs. Garrison was born in Anderson, SC, on October 21, 1934. She graduated from Anderson High School in 1952. She received her BA degree in English from Winthrop College in 1956 and taught at R.J. Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem, NC, for two years. On June 8, 1958, she was married to Dr. Glen Earl Garrison. The Garrisons lived in Charlottesville, VA, Claxton, GA, and Durham, NC, while Dr. Garrison did his medical residency, research in the Heart Disease Control Program of the U.S. Public Health Service, and fellowship in cardiology. In 1965 Dr. Garrison accepted a faculty position at the Medical College of Georgia, and the Garrisons moved to Augusta where they have remained for more than fifty years.
Mrs. Garrison was a member of First Baptist Church in Augusta where she taught adult and children’s Sunday school classes and was a director and teacher in the English as a Second Language Program for many years. She served as president of Baptist Women. She was a member of the Anna Bannister Sunday School Class and the Lucy Wright Parker Mission Group.
Mrs. Garrison was a member and president of the Alliance to the Richmond County Medical Society, a member of the Medical College of Georgia Faculty-Spouse Club, a member of the Azalea Garden Club, a member of the Rev. Pierre Robert Chapter of the National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century, a member of the College Hill Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, a member of the Augusta Genealogical Society, a member of Historic Augusta, and a member of Friends of the Augusta Library.
In addition to her husband, Dr. Glen Earl Garrison, she is survived by two daughters: Carolyn Garrison Bunce and her husband Clayton Giles Bunce of Ellijay, GA, and Dr. Jane Garrison Blanchard and her husband James Edwin Blanchard of Augusta, GA, and seven grandchildren: Philip Charles Paradis and his wife Stefanie Fernandes Paradis, Andrew Glen Paradis, William Thomas Paradis, Laura Bailey Turrentine and her husband Dr. Jake Everett Turrentine, Martha Anne Bailey, Jason Charles Bailey, and Nathan James Bailey. She is also survived by four great grandchildren: Susan Elizabeth Paradis, Emma Maree Paradis, Edwin Blaine Paradis, and Luke Everett Turrentine.
The family would like to thank the physicians, nurses, and many other people at Georgia Regents Medical Center for their love, care, and support.
