Augusta, GA - Mrs. Elizabeth (Bee) Lane Macuch passed away peacefully, in the early morning hours of Thursday, June 4, 2014. Bee was the daughter of the late Mr. William Wesley Lane and Mrs. Myrtle Lee McFarland Lane of Atlanta, Georgia. Bee is survived by her husband of 69 years, Mr. Edwin Roger Macuch.
Bee was born in Atlanta, Georgia on March 23, 1926. She attended Christ the King High school in Atlanta, and Rolling College in Winter Park, Florida. Bee and Ed met when they were young, and began a romance that would span over 70 wonderful years. They moved from Atlanta to Augusta in 1947, where Ed, his two eldest brothers, and his father founded a family business, and Bee began creating a warm and happy home for the two of them. While the family business grew, so did the family, as Bee and Ed became parents to a daughter and two sons. In the 1950's, they built a lovely house on Aumond Road, in which they raised their family and lived for the next 51 years, before moving to the Brandon Wilde retirement community in 2007.
Along with being a wonderful wife and mother, Bee was a consummate hostess. She took pride in ensuring that her home was tastefully and beautifully appointed, and guests were treated with the warmest hospitality and grace. She enjoyed gardening, and saw to it that her yard was always manicured and elegant. Bee and Ed enjoyed entertaining family and friends through the years. There was much laughter and love during birthdays, holidays and other celebrations. Many gatherings were spent at the kitchen table, enjoying corned beef sandwiches on freshly baked rye bread with crunchy dill pickles - a favorite meal of the entire family! Bee loved her close-knit group of friends, who often gathered at her home to play Bridge. She also loved to travel. She and Ed shared an intimate host of friends, with whom they spent a great deal of time visiting other countries and exotic locales. Bee was not one to sit idly, while the world went by. She enjoyed life to the fullest, making the most of each opportunity and experience, and meeting new challenges with enthusiasm and dedication.
Bee was very active in her community. She was heavily involved in numerous civic groups and cultural organizations. Bee was the organizer of the volunteer program at Doctor's Hospital of Augusta, and was the first President of the Doctor's Hospital Guild. Bee was a member of the Augusta Ballet Board. During her tenure with the Ballet, the board decided to expand into opera. This was the catalyst for the creation of the Augusta Opera Association. She was President of the Forest Hill School Club, and President of the Augusta Symphony Orchestra Guild. She was Chairman of Volunteers for the first Headstart program in Augusta. She served on the Board of Directors of the American Red Cross; on the Board of Trustees of the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art; and on the Board of Directors of University Health Care Foundation. An active member of several churches throughout her lifetime, Bee was a founding member of Covenant Presbyterian and Green Street Presbyterian West (now St. Andrews Presbyterian). Bee was a long time member of the Town and Country Garden Club, other members of which marveled at her seemingly effortless ability to grow fabulous peonies. Bee and Ed have also been active members of the Augusta Country Club for over sixty years.
In addition to her husband, Bee is survived by her three children: Lee Macuch Haydu, Del Mar, California; Rodger Alan Macuch (Jennifer), Fripp Island, SC; and William Louis Macuch (Libby), Augusta, GA. Also left to cherish her memory are nine grandchildren: Michelle Lee Haydu, New York, NY; Sarah Elizabeth Haydu, Santa Monica, CA; Louis Alexander Macuch and Nicholas Alan Macuch, Fripp Island, SC; Elizabeth Macuch Mendoza (Michael), Benjamin Albright Macuch, Emma Grey Macuch, Rosemary Margaret Macuch and William McKinley Macuch, Augusta, GA; and two great grandchildren; Charles Edward Mendoza and Waylon Albright Mendoza, Augusta, GA.
The family wishes to extend their sincerest gratitude to the Brandon Wilde staff, and Bee and Ed’s personal care assistants; with special recognition of Miss Rosanna Greene, and Mrs. Theresa Moffett for the generous, loving and professional care they provided during the past two years. The family is so thankful for them, and so blessed that Ed will have their kind love and attention to help him during this very difficult time.
There will be a memorial service in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son on Sunday, June 8, 2014 at 3:00 pm. Family and friends will gather from 2:00 to 3:00 pm to reminisce and pay respects before the service. Donations may be made, in Bee's honor, to the Alzheimer's Association.
