Ellen Callaway Merry, age 94, passed away on April 30, 2024 in Martinez, Georgia. She was a beloved daughter, sister, aunt and friend. Throughout her life, her family and friends have been blessed by the many ways she has demonstrated her love through beautiful and creative gifts and by her faithful presence, care and kindness.
Ellen was born on February 19, 1930 in Augusta Georgia to the late Kenneth Holmes Merry, Sr and Gena Callaway Merry. She graduated from Tubman High School, attended Converse College and graduated from University of Georgia in Athens. Following graduation, she did clerical work at the Augusta Arsenal and Fort Gordon. She faithfully cared for her parents in their later years. Over the course of our life, Ellen became accomplished in a number of creative pursuits. She studied painting as well as lace making, embroidery and other textile arts. Her art graced her home and happily for her family, she shared pieces that they have displayed in their homes. She was an excellent cook and her nieces and nephews have fond memories of birthday dinners, special cakes, as well as seeking her instruction on how to cook. She enjoyed birdwatching, walking and travel. She played classical guitar and was a member of the Guitar Club. Her home was always a welcoming place for family of all generations. Her nieces and nephews as well as great nieces, and nephews remember the fun of playing a wide variety of games she kept in a cabinet for them; ping-pong in the game room and hide and seek in the yard. Even as they grew up and had families of their own, she was always interested in hearing what her nieces and nephews were doing and knowing that they were well.
Ellen was proceeded in death by her sister, May Merry McDonald, her brother-in-law, Dr. J. Kenneth McDonald and her brother, Kenneth Holmes Merry Jr. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Charlotte Bohler Merry, nieces and nephews: Dr. J. Kenneth McDonald Jr. (Dr. Judy McDonald), Merry McDonald Dirksen (Dr. John Dirksen), Robert B. McDonald (Jenny), Ellen A. Merry and Kenneth D. Merry (Elizabeth) and numerous great nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held on May 4, 2024 at Westover Memorial Park with Rev. Dave Dillard officiating.
