Augusta, GA – Etta Elizabeth Bentley McLeod was born to Charley Elmer Bentley, a farmer, and his wife, Jewel Boss, on October 10, 1934, in Loganville, Georgia. She left this world on June 23, 2021. She fought to the end as she lived – fiercely, independently, and on her own terms.
She was predeceased by her husband of 43 years, Charles Winford McLeod, who affectionately referred to her as his Gold Nugget and often was captured in pictures looking at her instead of the camera. In true Etta fashion, she never quite forgave Charles for leaving her 23 years ago and no doubt he is hearing about it now. She was the middle of five daughters and was predeceased by her sisters, Ada Bentley, Margaret Aaron, Floice Wade, and Vera Martin. She has waited so long, with love, to be reunited with her loved ones. She is survived by her son, Chuck McLeod, and her daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Jimmy Bower. She was Grandma to Jennifer (Gabe) Fuller and Mimi to Brynn, Tessa, and Charlie Bower who will miss her dreadfully.
The family would like to extend many thanks to Etta’s Innisbrook neighbors and Debbie Bower who helped her in so many big and small ways in recent years. In addition, the family sends appreciation to the staff at University Hospital who cared for her and her family with compassion during her final hospitalization.
A funeral service will be held Friday, June 25, 2021, at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son with Dr. Kenneth Word officiating. Interment will follow in Westover Memorial Park
The family will receive friends on Friday one hour prior to the service at Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors, 214 Davis Rd., Augusta, GA 30907 (706) 364-8484. Please sign the guestbook at
