Doctor Eugene Francis Binet was born into Eternal Life on December 22, 2014 at GRU Hospital with his family present and after a short illness. He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Audrey Marie Grier Binet, OFS. Dr. Binet received his primary and secondary education in St. Paul, Minnesota. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of St. Thomas with a BS in Pre-medicine and was a 1962 graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School. After an internship at St. Mary’s Hospital in Minneapolis, he served as a general medical officer in the United States Naval Reserve from 1963 to 1965 at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
After serving at Camp Lejeune, Dr. Binet returned to Minnesota to pursue a residency in Radiology and a fellowship in Neuroradiology at the University of Minnesota Medical School. In June 1969 he was board certified in Diagnostic Radiology by the American Board of Radiology. From July 1969 to June 1978 Dr. Binet served as Asst./Assoc. Professor of Radiology and Chief of the Section of Neuroradiology at State University of New York Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, NY.
In July 1978 Dr. Binet and his family moved to Little Rock, Arkansas where he served for nine years as Professor and Vice Chairman of the Department of Radiology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and Chief of Radiology at the John L. McClellan VA Medical Center. In July 1987, he was appointed Warren Professor and Chairman of the Department of Radiology at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, GA and held this position for 13 years until his retirement in 2000.
Dr. Binet was affectionately known as Gene, Gene-O, Dad, Pops and Grandpa. He possessed a very keen intellect and a wonderful sense of humor. He was a very talented joke teller and storyteller, holding groups of family and friends spellbound. He regularly regaled friends and family with extraordinary puns born of his keen intellect and sense of humor. Professionally, Dr. Binet was known as a gifted teacher, clinical scientist and administrator. Dad and Grandpa never missed an opportunity to use those gifts personally with countless successful “teaching moments”.
Dr. Binet published more than sixty peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters and scientific exhibits. On numerous occasions Dr. Binet was an invited speaker at scientific meetings and medical conventions. He made many trips to other medical centers as visiting professor. For many years Dr. Binet served as an examiner for the American Board of Radiology. He was a recipient of the special certificate of competence in Neuroradiology from the American Board of Radiology. Dr. Binet was a retired member of numerous medical and radiological societies including: the American Medical Association, the American College of Radiology (Fellow), the Radiology Society of North America, the American Roentgen Ray Society, the Eastern Radiology Society, the American Society of Neuroradiology, the Southeastern Neuroradiology Society, the Central New York Radiology Society, the Arkansas Chapter of the American College of Radiology, the Georgia Chapter of the American College of Radiology, and the Richmond County Medical Society.
In his retirement, Dr. Binet enjoyed golf, reading and model trains. He was an active member of Knights of Columbus Council 8495 that meets on the grounds of St. Theresa of Avila Catholic Parish. As a very active member of the Greater Augusta Chapter of Georgia Right to Life, Dr. Binet championed the pro-life cause to protect the innocent lives of the unborn, the handicapped and the elderly infirm.
Dr. Binet is survived by his wife Audrey and five children, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild: Father Scott Francis Binet MD, MI; Todd M. Binet and his wife Heidi and their children Hailee, Luke and Burke Binet of Houston, Texas; Lynne Marie Binet Vaiden and her children Thomas and Jacob and grandson Gunner of Augusta, Georgia; Mark C. Binet of New York, New York and Matthew A. Binet, wife Paola and their son Noah of Orlando, Florida. Dr. Binet is also survived by his only sibling, Virginia Binet Berg, of Fairfax, Virginia.
The Vigil with the World Mission Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet for Dr. Binet will take place at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church, 4921 Columbia Road in Grovetown, GA 30813 from 7-10 PM on Sunday, December 28th. The family will be present to visit at the Vigil and also invites you to their home at 4275 Owens Road, #703 (The Preserves), Evans, Georgia 30809 (Brandon Wilde Life Care Community). The funeral mass will be held at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church at 3 PM on Monday, December 29th. Father Scott Francis Binet will preside. Pallbearers will be Larry Sprague, Thomas and Jacob Vaiden; Luke, Burke, Todd, Mark and Matthew Binet. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the MCG Department of Radiology, the Knights of Columbus Council 8495, and the Richmond County Medical Society. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the Greater Augusta Chapter of Georgia Right to Life and/or the St. Theresa Columbarium Fund.
