Augusta, GA - Evelyn Runnels Whitehurst, 75, loving wife of the late Richard Whitehurst, entered into heaven on June 26, 2022, with her family by her side. She was born May 29, 1947, in Norfolk, VA. She was the oldest of four daughters to the late Charles H. Runnels and Antoinette Sorrento Runnels.
Evelyn married her childhood sweetheart, Richard, and became a dedicated Army wife for 51 years. They traveled all over the world. Evelyn’s first trip overseas landed her in Bangkok, Thailand. It was there that she and Richard adopted their one and only daughter, Branda. From there the three were inseparable. Evelyn spent her entire life working hard to take care of her family. She graduated from Augusta College and ran her own successful business, The Window Dresser, as an interior and window treatment designer. Her beautiful work can be found from Virginia down to Florida. But her greatest accomplishment was her family. Especially her granddaughter, Faith. The two spent many weekends together crafting, baking, playing their favorite games, having tea parties with friends, and lots of Amazon shopping. Faith was truly her pride and joy.
She is survived by her daughter, Branda Whitehurst Hicar, her son-in-law, Nickolas and her beloved granddaughter, Faith; three sisters, Charlotte Burke (husband Lynn), Patricia “Louie” McIver (husband Joe), Jennie Smith (husband Bill), many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins, and her best friends. All who loved her dearly. In addition to her husband, she is predeceased by her mother and father.
Evelyn’s final wish was to be cremated and her ashes combined with the love of her life, Richard, and their ashes to be scattered together along Skyline Drive in Virginia. The two spent much of their youth and retirement cruising through the mountains with the top down.
The family will have a private celebration of her life at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you continue to pray for strength, love your family, and spend as much time with them as possible.
