Florence A. Whittle

Beech Island, SC – Mrs. Florence Anne Whittle passed away Thursday, October 27th, 2022 on the Atkinson family farm in Beech Island where she was raised.

She is survived by her daughters Anne Elizabeth Whittle, with whom she resided for the last several years, Mary Katherine Whittle, granddaughter, Elizabeth Crain (Brad), grandson Wesley Whittle, and great-grandson Luke Crain. She was predeceased by her husband, Hiram Wesley Whittle, parents Bertha Holderly Atkinson and Frank Whatley Atkinson, as well as two brothers Frank Whatley Atkinson, Jr. and John Atkinson. Born on November 24, 1927 in Aiken County; she made lifelong friends in the farming community, one of which remained dear to her heart, Kenneth Morgan.

A 1948 graduate of Winthrop College with a degree in History and English, she joined the workforce and was employed with Shell Oil Company, E. I. Dupont as well as the Medical College of Georgia. Through the years she gave her time and service as a volunteer with the Crippled Children Association, Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, and Help Line.
Mrs. Florence was one of the founding members of the Beech Island Garden Club where she held various offices for sixty years, and she enjoyed the fellowship of friends in The Friendship Club. An avid gardener, her favorite flower was the Black-Eyed Susan and her other hobbies included reading, needle work, and crafting Christmas ornaments that still adorn the trees of her family and friends.
At a young age, she joined Beech Island First Baptist Church and it was there she was married in 1951 and remained a faithful member until her health failed.
Funeral Services will be graveside at Hammond Cemetery in Beech Island, SC on Tuesday, November 1st, 2022 at 2:00pm. The service will be officiated by Rev. Frank Barker, and the family will receive friends after the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations to be made in memory of Florence to Enhabit Hospice, 37 Varden Drive, Suite A & B, Aiken, SC 29803.
