Augusta, GA-Frances Robinson Merry of Augusta died Monday, October 12, 2015.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, October 17, at Westover Memorial Park with the Rev. George Muir of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Thomas Poteet and Son, 214 Davis Road, prior to the service.
Fran was born Feb. 2, 1937 in Augusta, the daughter of Frances Robinson Merry and Ernest Briscoe Merry Jr. Survivors include daughters, Frances Merry Simkins of Los Angeles and Robin Simkins Pongonis and husband Jay of Marietta; sister, Anne Merry Bell and her husband Dennis of Augusta; brother, Philip Robinson Merry of Aiken, S.C., and granddaughters, Sarah Frances Simkins of Norfolk, Va., and Anne Briscoe Pongonis, Rebecca Jane Pongonis, Elizabeth Allan Pongonis and Margaret George Pongonis of Marietta. She was preceded in death by her son, George Bryan Simkins Jr., brother, Ernest Briscoe Merry III, and her parents.
Fran was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. She graduated from the Academy of Richmond County, attended Mary Baldwin College and was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of North Carolina. An avid Tar Heel fan, she adored all sports. Her dream job came when living in Atlanta and working with the Atlanta Braves during the “Worst to First” decade of the 1990’s. She has forever been dubbed the true “Braves Fran.”
