Augusta, GA - Frank Oswald Byrd, Jr, 86, beloved husband of Louise Corley Byrd for sixty-five years entered into rest at his residence Monday, May 1, 2023.
Born to Frank O. Byrd Sr. and Bethany Raborn Byrd, he grew up in Augusta and was a graduate of Hephzibah High School. In 1958 he married Louise Corley, and his service in the Army took the couple to France to live for two years. He returned to family land on Byrd Road that he loved and built a home for his growing family.
After his service in the Army, Frank became a licensed master plumber and electrician, and worked in the family business, Byrd’s Electric & Plumbing, Inc. He took over as the CEO of the business upon his father’s retirement. He thrived and lived to work which led him to continue working until age 80.
To his friends and family, Frank was fondly known as “Ozzie.” He enjoyed cooking, fishing, gathering to fellowship, growing vegetables in his garden, spending time with his family and friends, and serving his church, Abilene Baptist Church. To those he loved the most, Ozzie enjoyed sharing all aspects of how to do something. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. As his family’s biggest fan, Ozzie shared their accomplishments with anyone who would listen.
While Ozzie endured a long battle with heart disease and COPD, he did not want these things to define him. He always had the desire to keep going as he constantly had something he was working on. Ozzie will be remembered for his strength in the Lord, perseverance, and determination.
Surviving is his wife: Louise Corley Byrd, sons: James Oswald Byrd (Lisa), Michael Corley Byrd (Kelli), daughter: Lisa Louise Byrd, grandchildren: Brittany Byrd Wilkerson (Jimmy), Brooke Byrd Shapiro (Jake), Haylie Byrd James (Chris), and Courtney Byrd Custer (T.J.), great-grandchildren: Lee Custer, Logan Custer, Riggins Shapiro, and one due soon - Ellis Leigh James. He was preceded in death by his parents, and baby brother, Arthur Byrd.
Ozzie’s family would like to thank the excellent care from Philanda Lewis, Betty Brown, Lisa Butler and Tria Washington. The family would also like to thank the numerous doctors and nurses who provided him with exceptional care, especially Dr. Kraig Wangsnes.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, May 4, 2023 at 1:00 PM at Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors with Reverend William F. Harrell officiating. Interment will follow at Gracewood Cemetery off Cemetery Road in Richmond County. The family will receive friends and family one hour prior to the service. Pallbearers will be Mike Bryant, Bennie Chavous, Key Kernaghan, Trey Kernaghan, Darren Smith, and Tony Winters.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to The American Heart Association.
