Friedrich Hartmut Leibach, PhD

Augusta, GA – Entered into rest Wednesday, December 2, 2015, Friedrich Hartmut Leibach, 85, husband to Elizabeth Kenimer Leibach.

Dr. Leibach was a native of Kitzingen (Bavaria), Germany. He lived through World War II and was translator for the U.S. Occupational Forces until 1955. Dr. Leibach came to the United States on a Rotary Scholarship to Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State University) and graduated in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in chemistry. Subsequently, he graduated from Emory University in 1964 with a Ph.D. in biochemistry. He was the husband to Diane Cooper Leibach from 1961 until her death in 1988. In 1961, Dr. Leibach became a naturalized United States citizen during a ceremony in Atlanta. Dr. Leibach was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, NRC, at NASA Ames Research Center in California from 1964-1967 and then appointed to a professorship at the Medical College of Georgia. While at MCG he was assistant professor from 1967-1973, associate professor from 1973-1979, professor from 1971-1991, professor and vice-chairman from 1991-1984, professor and chairman from 1990-2001 and professor emeritus from 2001 until the time of his death. Dr. Leibach was an editorial reviewer for multiple scientific journals and editor of the American Journal of Physiology (Liver and Gastrointestinal Physiology) from 1993 and Pharmaceutical Sciences from 1999 until his death. He was an active researcher in protein biochemistry and molecular biology (cloning and transport), was awarded over 35 grants, and authored over 250 abstracts, articles and book chapters. Dr. Leibach, distinguished professor in the Medical College of Georgia Schools of Medicine, Dentistry and Graduate Studies, was mentor and/or major professor to 37 masters, doctoral and post-doctoral candidates who are practicing across the globe. Dr. Leibach was a popular speaker involved in numerous presentations, national and international seminars, and symposia as well as a member/fellow in numerous scientific and professional societies. He received more than a dozen local, national, and international awards and honors including the prestigious international Rank Prize in Nutrition in 2004 presented to him at the Royal College of Surgeons in London.

Family members in addition to his wife include sons: John Gunther Leibach of Augusta and James Werner (Jimmy) Leibach and wife Diane of Augusta; daughter: Maria Ragsdale and husband Jeff of Marietta; stepson: John L. Draper of Augusta; grandchildren: John “Cooper”, Taylor, Camille, Thomas, Walker, Frederick “Sanders” and Kenley; and brother and sister-in-law: Werner Wilhelm Heinrich Leibach and Christa Helene Leibach of Mainstockheim, Germany. Dr. Leibach was preceded in death by his brother: Gunther Karl Heinz Leibach and parents, Hans and Hedwig Leibach.

A funeral service will be Monday, December 7, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. at the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection with Pastor David Hunter officiating. Lunch will follow the service in the church fellowship hall.
