Gary Lou Vahrenwald
Augusta, GA – Gary Lou Vahrenwald passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Thursday, May 31, 2018, Gary Lou Vahrenwald, 75, husband of Lillian Hui.
Gary was born in 1943 in Canton, Ohio to parents, Albert and Mary (Sallo) Vahrenwald. He graduated from Byesville High School and joined the U.S. Army. While in the military he moved to Augusta, Georgia where he met his wife, Lillian. Gary continued his education, ultimately earning his Master’s in Education from Georgia Southern. He retired from the U.S. Army and Civil Service after 43 combined years as a Training Supervisor at the Directorate of Training (DOT) at Fort Gordon. Gary loved sports and refereed football and basketball over 35 years with the Georgia High School Association. He served as an Elder and Usher at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and an active member of their Men’s Bible Study. Gary loved to travel, visiting many National Parks and spending time at the beach with his family.
Gary is preceded in death by his parents and his son Darryl Vahrenwald. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sister June Vlacovsky, sons Scott (Becky) Vahrenwald and Ronald Vahrenwald, grandchildren Evelyn, Lydia, and Ryan and his many nieces and nephews. He was beloved by those who knew him and will be dearly missed by all.
The funeral service will be Monday, June 4, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church with Pastor Roger Schwartz officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like memorial contributions be made to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 402 Aumond Road, Augusta, GA 30909. Condolences may be sent to his family through Thomas Poteet Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends Monday, June 4, 2018 prior to the service beginning at 9:30 A.M. at the church.
