Gary Melton, Sr.
Augusta, GA – Entered into rest Monday, March 20, 2017, Gary Wayne Melton, Sr., age 78, loving husband of 44 years to the late Sue Fortney Melton.
Mr. Melton was born in Augusta and graduated from The Academy of Richmond County in 1956 where he lettered in baseball, basketball and football. In baseball he played on three consecutive state championship teams, in football was selected as Most Valuable Player by his team mates, and in basketball was a starting forward. He played for and held in high esteem some of the greatest coaches in Richmond Academy history – A.L Williams, Harry Milligan, and Frank Inman. He was in retail management and retired from Homefolks Wholesale Company after 40 years of service. An avid sportsman, hunter and family man his life was one of loyalty beyond reproach, strong work ethic, and humility. His positive influence on those who came in contact with him will long be remembered.
Family members include daughter: Lynn Bailey (Baxter); son: Gary Wayne Melton, Jr. (Karen); grandchildren: Sonny Wall, Monica Hutto, Paul Bailey, Marilyn Bailey, Kyle Melton and eight great grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Melton was preceded in death by his daughter, Christy Hutto and grandson, Gary Jason Melton.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 24, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son with Rev. Thurman Norville officiating. Burial will be immediately following at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
