Gene Neal, Jr.

Augusta, GA – Lester Eugene “Gene” Neal, Jr., 78, entered into rest on Thursday, August 10, 2023 surrounded by his family.

Gene was born September 29th, 1944, the oldest son of Lester Eugene Neal, Sr. and Emily Green Neal. In 1964 Gene married the love of his life, Jane Maxwell Neal.

Gene founded “Gene’s Discount Quality Clothing” and kept the men of Augusta in Duckhead pants and his “famous T-shirt” worn around the world. He loved his store and his dear employees, or “Gene’s Girls”. Gene also loved the game of golf and was instrumental in starting the college golf tournament at the former Augusta College. He was a member of the Augusta County Club, the Augusta Golf Association, as well as Highlands Country Club where he enjoyed many rounds with dear friends.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents and his youngest brother John Richard Neal (Cindy) of Albany, Georgia. In addition to his wife, Jane, survivors include his daughter: Kim Neal Hillis (Michael); son: Chris Neal (Ashley), brother: Lenson Neal (Lynda) and his loving grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the phenomenal staff of Marshall Pines for their gentle care and the exceptional caregiving staff who assisted Gene over the past three years. They would also like to thank Enhabit Hospice for their support of Gene and the family.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 17, 2023 at 3:00 PM at Aldersgate United Methodist Church with Rev Brett DeHart officiating. Following the service, the family will receive friends at the home of Ashley and Mark Pritchett until 6:00 PM. Honorary pallbearers will be the AGA.
