Augusta, GA - George Lombard Bowen, Sr., a fourth-generation Augustan born May 21, 1937, entered into rest on March 29, 2025. He was the son of Charles W. Bowen, Jr. and Alice Lombard Bowen.
George came to saving knowledge of Jesus Christ when in the 5th grade at Monte Sano Elementary School as a result of a few local Gideon Camp members of The Gideons International offering free Gideon Pocket Testaments inside the school and follow-up by his father. He grew up as a child attending Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church. He graduated from The Academy of Richmond County 1955. During the summers he was employed in the family business Bowen Brothers Hardware Co. He also graduated from The University of GA at Athens in 1959 with a BBA Degree and was a member of the Chi Phi Fraternity. His military service was first with the GA Air National Guard and later with the US Air Force Reserve.
He branched out from the Bowen family business in 1959 and worked for Glidden Paint Co.; first as Credit Manager and then as Retail Sales Manager and won their top National Retailing Award in the U S. In 1968. George went into the Real Estate Business with Southern Finance Corp., and soon won the H. Gould Barrett Real Estate Trophy in 1973.
His civic duties included being one of the original 50 Charter members of West Lake Country Club in 1966, an organizing and founding Board Member of Westminster Day School 1971 and was a member for over 40 years and a past President of Kiwanis Club of Uptown Augusta 1971 - 72. George was a Founding Broker partner with his brother Charles of Bowen Real Estate 1975, then he qualified as a CRS Charter Member real estate designation 1979. Later in his real estate career, he joined Blanchard & Calhoun Real Estate Co. in 1995. He was a Life Member of The Gideons International since 1979 and had served as a Local Camp Past President.
He was a member and also served as a Deacon, Elder and a Trustee while at First Presbyterian Church 1969 - 2004, It was there where he was certified as a Lay Teacher Trainer of Evangelism Explosion International, a teaching member of Fishermen's Fellowship and served on a short-term mission to Samara Russia to plant churches all under the spiritual leadership of Rev. Dr. John W. P. Oliver.
Originating from a west Augusta fellowship group starting in 2003, George as one of the provisional Elder and with other provisional Elders and provisional Deacons along with 166 other fellowship members helped start Christ Church Presbyterian as an independent Presbyterian church in 2004; now the church is a member of the PCA. At Christ Church, George served as the 1st Chairman of the Missions Committee, served on the Building Committee, served on the Evangelism and Membership Committee, and also served as a Trustee, a Ruling Elder since 1973 and then as an Elder Emeritus.
George is survived by his loving, forgiving and merciful wife of 64 years Jane Smalley Bowen and their two sons: George Lombard Bowen, Jr. (Joan) and Guy Lee. Bowen (Jill), 4 grandchildren: Michael D. Bowen, Nathan W. Bowen, Guy H. “Worth” Bowen and Jack L. Bowen, a brother: Charles W. Bowen, III and many cousins, nephews and nieces.

A visitation will be held at Christ Church, Presbyterian, 4301 Southern Pines Dr., Evans, GA 30809 starting at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, April 3, 2025. The home going celebration service will follow at 11:00 A.M.
Honorary pallbearers are The Elders, Deacons and Trustees of Christ Church, Presbyterian and members of the Augusta South/West Gideons International Camp. Interment will be at Westover Memorial Park, 2601-Wheeler Rd, Augusta, GA 30904.
