Mr. George J. Smith
Augusta, GA – George J. Smith, age 90, passed away peacefully into the arms of the Lord yesterday at Doctor’s Hospital.
Mr. Smith was born in Cardiff, Wales, UK in 1924 and moved to New York with his parents Alonzo and Emma Smith. George joined the Army in 1942, serving abroad throughout Europe during World War II. After 10 years of faithful service, he retired and joined the Georgia Army National Guard and went on to serve his country in the Corps of Engineers for another 23 years ultimately retiring as a Command Sgt. Major.
George was a member of the Knights of Columbus, JFK Council 5484 where he served as Grand Knight and Faithful Navigator.
Mr. Smith is survived by a wife, Elizabeth, one daughter: Cindy Jones. He also leaves behind two grandchildren: Joshua Bates and D. Tyler Bates; four great grandchildren: Ethan Bates, Audriana Bates, Isla Bates, and William Bates; and a special niece, Frances Peters.
The discipline and patriotism he learned in the Army never left him, as friends and family will attest.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Teresa of Avila in Grovetown, GA, on Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at 12 Noon and he will be interred in a family plot at Bellevue Memorial Gardens in Grovetown.
The family will receive friends following the service at the graveside.
