George Moore Champion, III
A Celebration of His Life
George was a Renaissance Man. He had many talents and a vast knowledge and deep appreciation of various people, music, books, and cultures. George was an “equal opportunity friend” who did not discriminate based on someone’s “race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, marital status or political affiliation.”
George had a generous soul. He was kind-hearted and would always pitch in when asked. From setting up his sister’s classroom library to working with the Augusta Sail and Power Squadron to helping his mom in her real estate endeavors to dropping everything in Texas to come help care for his grandmother, George was truly there for his family and friends.
He was an avid reader and owned thousands of books in his lifetime. His mother says he started reading the day they brought him home from the hospital after he was born. His unselfish character extended to every facet of his life EXCEPT for his books. He would not give away any, although he would share them. He just expected them back. He had no qualms about borrowing books although he often did not return those.
His nephews describe George as a walking almanac. He loved trivia and had an amazing memory for even the most obscure facts. His sisters often used him as their “phone-a-friend” when they needed the answer to an elusive piece of trivia.
As a talented artist, George loved to draw and doodle. At various times, he and his sisters talked about writing children’s books with George being the illustrator. But he was humble about his work as he didn’t think it was very good. We beg to differ.
Most importantly, George loved his family. He supported and cheered on his sisters, Christy and Becky. He took pride in all the accomplishments of his nephews, John and Andy. He took great delight in spending time with his great-niece, Autumn, who was his joy. Most of all, George loved and admired his mom, Nettie, for her consistent, and unyielding faith and love of her children.
