MODOC, SC. – Entered into rest Wednesday, February 24, 2010, at University Hospital, Mr. George Ray Chesnut, Jr., 84, husband of Elizabeth “Bettie” B. Chesnut.

Mr. Chesnut was a native of Atlanta, GA and a 1948 Georgia Tech graduate with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering. Mr. Chesnut served in the U.S. Navy Air Corp during World War II. He retired in 1965 as plant manager at Babcock and Wilcox. Mr. Chesnut was a charter member of Covenant Presbyterian Church. He was a board member and past president of Augusta Rotary Club, served on YMCA Board of Directors-Personnel Committee, Metro Director of National Alliance of Businessmen, Chairman of Private Industry Council, United Way- Co-Chairman of Budget Committee and Large Firms Division, Member of Executive Reserve (Dept. of Commerce), Chairman Factory Operators of Refractories Institute (National), Board Member of Augusta Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of Manufacturers Council of Augusta, Member of Board of Health Central- University Hospital, and member of Augusta Country Club, and he served as the first president of the Modoc Shores Association.

Family members in addition to his wife include his daughter: Beverly Charlotte Franklin of Aiken, SC; his son: Roger Ray Chesnut of Richmond Hill, GA; sister: Mrs. Caroline McNeill of Atlanta, GA; brother-in-law: Sam Tinkler of Lakeland, FL; Grandchildren: Matthew Franklin, Lesley Chesnut, and Brian Chesnut.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, February 27, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. in the Chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son with Rev. Gary DeMore officiating. The family will receive friends after the service.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
