AUGUSTA, Ga. – Mr. George H. Smith, 90, devoted and loving husband of Ruby Smith for more than 63 years, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 12, after a brief hospitalization.

Mr. Smith was born in Jefferson County in 1920 to the late Hubert Eugene and Eva Seibell Smith. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and served honorably in World War II. After his discharge from the Navy, he joined Metropolitan Life Insurance Company where he served as an agent and an agency manager eventually retiring after many years of dedicated and rewarding service. Mr. Smith was devoted to his church, his family, and his friends leaving many memories of a life well lived.

He was an active member of First Baptist Church, where he belonged to the Crusaders Sunday School Class. He served on numerous committees including stewardship and insurance, was involved in home and foreign missions, and sang in the First Family Singers Choir. He was also a member emeritus of the George Walton Lodge.

His brother, Earnest Eugene Smith, and a great-grandson, Owen Washington, preceded Mr. Smith in death. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Marvin Smith (Royce); two daughters, Ann Hayes (Tom) and Linda Hilliard (Rick); five grandchildren, Kevin Street (Connie), Jennifer Scott (Kyle), Barrett Hayes (Jennifer), Jennifer Gibson (Roger) and Lindsay Washington (Chris); and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 15, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, with Drs. Greg DeLoach and Jacob Malone, and his nephew, the Rev. Curtis Bray, officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today (Monday) from 5-7 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Roland Deziel, Roger Gibson, Barrett Hayes, Kyle Scott, James
(J. T.) Traylor and Chris Washington. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Crusaders Sunday School Class.
