Augusta, GA – Entered into rest Sunday, July 18, 2010, Mr. Gerald Fitzgerald “Gerry” Saegert, 92, loving husband of Marie Scavullo Saegert
Gerry was born in New York City in 1918. He grew up in Bronx, NY and attended prep school at Mt. Joseph’s in Baltimore and college at University of Notre Dame, where he played football and Fordham University. He was named Notre Dame Man of the Year in 1972.
Gerry served as a 2nd Lieutenant with the U.S. Army Air Corps flying B-24’s during World War II.
After his discharge from the Army, he joined Legion Utensils Company in Long Island City, NY eventually becoming Director of Sales. The company established its manufacturing facilities in Waynesboro, Georgia in the early 70’s. Gerry moved to Augusta when the sales office moved in 1979.
He and his wife Marie were members of the Westchester and Augusta Country Clubs where they were avid golfers. He attended St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church and was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Augusta, GA. He was a long time member of the Knights of Columbus in New York and founding member of the Notre Dame Club in Augusta. He and Marie loved to travel the world for business and pleasure.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his brother-in-law, Charles J. Scavullo, Sr. and many nieces and nephews, as well as great nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Gertrude Saegert.
His family would like to express their gratitude to the management and staff of Brookdale Place, Heartland Hospice and Rescare Homecare, all of whom provided loving care for Gerry over the past few years.
Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at 11:00 AM at St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church with Rev. John Tran Celebrant. Interment will follow at Westover Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be his nephews and great nephews. Wake service Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at 7:00 PM at the church.
