Augusta, GA – Gerard (Jerry) Joseph Sweeney, born November 22, 1929, entered into eternal rest on Monday, January 11, 2010. Preceded by his parents, Norbert and Ann Sweeney, and by his two brothers, James (Jim) and Norbert (Marty) Sweeney.
Jerry was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, though he lived the larger part of his life in the Detroit area. Jerry served in the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division (51-52), graduated from Lawrence Technological University in 1963 with a degree in Civil Engineering, was registered as a professional engineer with the State of Michigan, and worked throughout Michigan in the field of building construction. In 1960, Jerry married Marie Elizabeth, and during their 49 years of marriage, they raised five children. Jerry and Marie relocated to Martinez, Georgia in 2003, where Jerry worked with the Ben Turnipseed Engineering Company.
Throughout his life, Jerry was an avid bowler, a skier and a camper. He was involved with Habitat for Humanity while in Michigan, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus throughout his life, becoming a 4th Degree Knight with the St. Teresa of Avila Parish in October of 2005.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife Marie; his sister Mary Catherine; his five children: Dianne, David, Patrick, Mark and Greg; his son in law Michael; his three daughters in law: Kirstin, Shelli and Ellen; and his five grandchildren: Allison, Emily, Connor, Kaitlyn and Maureen.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church with Father Gaspar Hegedus celebrant.
A Memorial Mass and Burial Service will be held in Mr. Sweeney’s native state of Michigan at a later date.
