Augusta, GA – Mr. Glenn Kenneth Smith, Jr. was a World War II veteran, husband, father, pilot of 4,000,000 miles in the sky. He took his last flight to our Father in Heaven, on Monday, July 3, 2023, at the age of 96.
He is preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Lehmberg Smith; father, Kenneth Smith Sr.; mother, Helen Sophie Elizabeth Haller; stepmother, Ida Helen Moss; brother, Richard H. Smith. Glenn is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Julia Hyacinth Manly Smith; his daughter, Karen K. Nevill; his sons: Gary Smith (Lynette), Glenn Kenneth Smith III, Geoffrey Karl Smith (Brenda); grandchildren: Rebecca Lynn Smith, Emily Ann Smith, Barbara Blaine Nevill, Courtney LaRue Smith, Sierra Nicole Pecson, Wesley John Smith, and great grandson Bradley Dean Ramos. He is also survived by stepchildren: James Marcel Britt (Cynthia), and Linda Britt Kelley (Randall), his step grandchildren: Amelia Rose Kelley, Richard Henry Kelley, Michele Britt Davis, Alison Britt Nelson, Collin Britt and great grandson, Jackson Lovett.
Glenn was a member of Trinity on the Hill Church and was a devoted singer in the Prime Time Singers, a member of the American Legion Post number 205 Augusta, the Augusta AMBUCS, the Augusta Elks Club #205, Texas Private Fliers, and the National Rifle Association. Glenn was a test pilot with Swearingen Aircraft and flew for various oil companies in Texas. He continued his love of air by employment with Morris Communications of Augusta for 19 years.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 8, 2023, at 3 o’clock in the chapel of Thomas Poteet and Son with Rev. Scott Hearn and Rev. Robert Leslie Holmes officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Billy Mitchell, Gil Strader, Roger Brandenburg, Richard Kelley, Randall Kelley, John and Kathy Layseth, James Britt, and William S. Morris III.
Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park in San Antonio, Texas.
