H. Sherman Blalock, MD
Orthopaedic Surgeon
Martinez, GA – Entered into rest Tuesday, May 31, 2011, H. Sherman Blalock, MD, 75, husband of Doris Jacobs Blalock.
Dr. Blalock was born and raised in Rome, GA and was the son of H. Felton and Frances Blalock who predeceased him. He graduated from Shorter College, attended the Medical College of Georgia and graduated with a Doctorate of Medicine degree in 1962. After medical school he completed an Internship in Lakeland, FL, was then drafted to the US Navy and assigned to the Marine Corps in Camp Lejeune, NC where he served until he was honorably discharged. Dr. Blalock moved to Augusta and completed a residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the Medical College of Georgia. He then completed training in hand surgery at the University of Louisville in Louisville, KY and returned to Augusta in 1969 as a founding partner of Orthopaedic Associates of Augusta. He remained in private practice at Orthopaedic Associates of Augusta for 32 years until his retirement in 2001. Jean Owens Arrington, his loyal nurse and friend, worked by his side for thirty one years. Dr. Blalock was a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a member of the Georgia Orthopaedic Society. He was also granted a membership into the American Society for Surgery of the Hand.
Dr. Blalock was an avid golfer and snow skier. He was a member of West Lake Country Club. He loved traveling to the mountains of North Carolina and Scotland. He was a member of St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church.
Family members in addition to his wife include his daughter: Elizabeth Blalock Schappell, DMD (John) of Martinez, his sons: John S. Blalock, DMD (Beth) of Martinez, Joseph M. Blalock of Augusta, four grandchildren and a brother: Dale L. Blalock (Patricia) of Adairsville, GA.
A graveside service will be held Friday, June 3, 2011 at 10:00 A.M. at Westover Memorial Park with The Reverend Jason Haddox officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the University Health Care Foundation, the H. Sherman Blalock Endowment Fund for Orthopaedic patients, 2100 Central Ave, Suite D-1, Augusta, GA 30904.
