Hammond Bold

Thomson, GA - Hammond Bold, 81, died peacefully on Wednesday, August 10, 2022 surrounded by family and friends.

The eldest son of George Gordon Bold and Elizabeth Reid Bold, Hammond was born in Augusta, GA, and grew up in Olde Towne where life-long friendships were made. During his teenage and young-adult years he was the drummer for a local band, the Downbeats. Hammond had the privilege of performing with Roy Orbison, Little Richard, and Brenda Lee. After graduating from the Academy of Richmond County, he married Elizabeth “Betty” Carmain and joined the United States Naval Construction Battalions, better known as the Navy Seabees. During his service, Hammond was stationed in Bermuda and Spain. After the Navy, the couple returned to Augusta, settling in Martinez. He and Betty were blessed with four children, Randy, James, Robert, and Elizabeth. In 1961, Hammond began his long career with Georgia Power. In 1969, while on a storm restoration assignment with three other colleagues, Hammond rescued a motorist who was trapped under his submerged vehicle. For this heroic deed, he was presented the Edison Electric Lifesaving Award from the National Safety Council.

Following Betty’s death in 1979, Hammond married Alicia Hollis and their son Hammond was born in 1988. His career took him to Thomson, where he retired from Georgia Power with 35 years of service. He was a past member of the Thomson Lions Club and volunteered with the Cub Scouts. Hammond loved driving his tractor, wood working, and building and flying model planes. He especially enjoyed time at the lake with his brothers, Bob and Bill. Hammond was a fantastic storyteller and will be remembered for his generosity, humor, and his okra stew.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, an infant sister, Elizabeth, a beloved son, Robert Lee Bold, and a brother Robert Reid Bold. He is survived by his wife: Alicia Bold; children: Randy Allen Bold, James Hammond Bold, Elizabeth Ann Bold Tudor (Charlie), George Gordon Hammond Bold, Jr. (Tess); grandchildren: Tara Bold, Brian Bold, Jamie Hadden, and Samuel Hammond Tudor; a very special great granddaughter: Shaye Patterson Roun (Joshua); great grandchildren: Logan and Sofia Bold, and Maggie and Jack Hadden; brother: William Bold (Diane); sister-in-law: Carol Bold; mother-in-law: Brenda Hollis; brother-in-law: Kevin Hollis (Susan); nephews: Chris Bold, Rob Bold, Christopher Hollis; nieces: Becky Daly, Pam King, Rebecca Quaiyoom; cousin: Ed (Pat) Sumerau; dear friend: Chess McCorkle, and steadfast physician and adopted family: Dr. James Millen.
