Augusta, GA – Mr. Harold Clinton Smith, son of the late James W. and Maggie Lee Moxley Smith, entered into rest on Monday, June 6, 2011 at Doctor’s Hospital, surrounded by his family. Born in Augusta, Georgia, Mr. Smith was a graduate of The Academy of Richmond County and The Junior College of Augusta. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp., which included a tour of duty in Iwakuni, Japan. Following active duty, he was a member of the U.S. Marine Corp. Reserves for two years and achieved the rank of Captain. He joined his families’ automotive business in 1960 and worked there for three years, then began a thirty year career in the insurance business, retiring in 1994. He was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church where he served as Sunday school teacher, Deacon, Deacon Emeritus and on various committees and Ministry teams. He was actively involved in many aspects of the church. He served on the Richmond County Commission from 1979-1983 and was chairman for one year in 1980. He served as Vice Chairman of the Georgia Republican Party in the early 1980s and had the honor of meeting President Ronald Reagan in Atlanta during this time – a highlight of his life. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Despite being diagnosed in 1995 with Parkinson’s disease, he never lost his sense of humor and dealt with his condition with faith, dignity and courage.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-one years, Gerry Jackson Smith; daughters, Sheron Smith of Macon, GA., Andrea Turpin (Wayne) of Martinez, GA., Jennifer Buchanan (Clayton) of Fernandina Beach FLA.; six grandchildren, Jeremy, Meredith and Clinton Turpin and Elizabeth, Sydney, and Clay Buchanan; a sister, Anne Cheney of Augusta, GA.; a brother, Jimmy Smith (Beth) of Hephzibah, GA. and several nephews, nieces, aunts and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 9, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at Hillcrest Baptist Church with Rev. Wayne Turpin (son-in-law) and Rev. Steve Patteson officiating. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be nephews. Honorary Pallbearers will be deacons, active and inactive of Hillcrest Baptist Church, and members of his former Sunday school class, the class he taught for many years, (currently, the Kemmerlin Class).
