Augusta, GA – Harriet Goldsmith beloved wife of Edward A. Goldsmith died peacefully after a brief illness on Friday, September 9, 2016.
Born in Los Angeles in 1925, she went as soon as she could to Hawaii after the War where she met and married Ed. A fun and busy life followed as she pursued life and her interests with passion and zeal. In Europe, where they lived for 5 years, she continued her lifelong fascination with cooking, travel, entertaining and friendships, even interning at a Michelin starred restaurant, and becoming fluent in French.
A drama queen, she regaled her kids and friends with stories of jumping off her roof with an umbrella for a parachute as a child, her years in the real estate business, and even greeted them as a blonde as they walked home from school (before the days people colored their hair). The Goldsmith family lived in Pittsburgh PA for years where Harriet entertained for Ed’s business and her own pleasure, and New Year’s Eve was always at the Goldsmith house and Harriet always danced the Hula.
When Ed retired they moved to Hilton Head then to Augusta, GA and she opened Harriet’s Kitchen. There she finally got to put her full creativity to work and prepared wonderful meals as she recreated the soup Nazi’s persona. After Ed died in 1995, life was not as fun but she maintained her restaurant until her stamina would not allow it.
She is survived by her 3 children Reed (wife Leslie), Sheila, and Kevin Goldsmith and their children, Ian and Mia (husband Charlie), Michael, Sean (wife Alyson) and Cary.
The family would like to thank the staff at Doctors Hospital where she spent her last week, the staff at Southeast Hospice who kept her out of pain and managed a peaceful death, the Chaplain Pauline at Doctors Hospital who prayed and sang for her, as well as Dusty, the Hospice chaplain. The family would also like to thank Tina Goldsmith who visited her weekly at the nursing home for years, uplifting her spirits and polishing her nails.
A private graveside service will be held.
