Augusta, GA- Harriet Heins Newton, 83, of Augusta, GA entered into rest Sunday, November 4, 2012, at Kentwood Extended Care Facility in Augusta, GA.

Mrs. Newton was born May 31, 1929, in Atlanta, GA to Mr. & Mrs. Harry A. Heins. She grew up in Augusta, GA and attended Joseph Lamar Elementary School and Tubman High School. She attended Augusta Junior College and graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in Sociology. She was a homemaker and an elementary school teacher in Augusta. Mrs. Newton was a member of St. Augustine's Episcopal Church for more than 40 years.

She is survived by her children Laura Umphrey (Steve), Amy McManus (Hollie), and Emily Fields (Robert), grandchildren Jesse Merritt (Stacey), Annie LaForce (Josh), Hollie McManus, Jr., Andrew McManus (Brittany), and Lily Fields, and great grandchildren Abigail, Bella, and Molly Merritt and Zane and Alice LaForce. She has one sister, Ann Lamson of Wilmington, NC.

She is preceded in death by her parents and two sons, Charles Michael Newton and Joseph Heins Newton.

The funeral and interment will be at St. Augustine Episcopal Church in Augusta Wednesday, November 7, 2012, at 11am. Reverend Dr. Jason M. Haddox will officiate. A reception at the church will follow the funeral service. The visitation will be Tuesday, November 6, 2012, from 6pm-8pm at Thomas Poteet & Son Home on Davis Road. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Kentwood Extended Care Facility in appreciation for the care she received.
