Harry Dolyniuk
Retired College Professor
Harry Dolyniuk entered into eternal rest on Monday, March 26, 2012 after a brief illness. He was born July 10, 1918 to Wasyl James and Agnes Miluch Dolyniuk and was the seventh of eleven children on a homesteaded farm in Belfield, North Dakota.
He was a graduate of Belfield High School. He received his B.A. degree from Dickinson State Teachers College (Dickinson State University), an M.A. degree from Indiana University; graduate studies at the University of Colorado, Mercer University, Emory University, and Chemical Research at the University of South Carolina.
He was a career educator, commencing his teaching career at East Central High School in Sioux City, Iowa, and South San Francisco high School from 1947-1949. He joined the faculty of the Junior College of Augusta in 1949 and was the last surviving professor who moved the college to its current location at the Augusta Arsenal. He retired following 31 years as an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Augusta College.
He served in the US Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater as a platoon sergeant of Co. K, 3rd BN 164th Infantry, Americal Division. He earned the Combat Infantry Badge, Presidential Unit Citation and two campaign battle stars in the Solomon Island battles of Guadalcanal and Bougainville. His regiment earned unit commendation from the First Marine Division commander, General Alexander Vandergrift, for having demonstrated "an overwhelming superiority over the enemy” on Guadalcanal. He was commissioned an officer upon his return from the South Pacific and following training troop jungle warfare tactics, ended the war in Military Intelligence as a Russian language interpreter.
He was happily married and devoted husband for 57 years to the late Laverne Hagan Dolyniuk who pre-deceased him in 2002. He was also preceded in death by parents, Wasyl and Agnes Dolyniuk, siblings John, Nicholas, Stephen, Peter, William and Dorothy. Daughter Elaine D. Gantz preceded him in death, also.
He is survived by sons Harry James Dolyniuk and Randy Karl Dolyniuk (Laura), brothers and sisters, Mary Rodakowski, Anna Dolyniuk, Philip Dolyniuk ( Magdalena) and Andrew K. Dolyniuk ( Ramona ); Grandchildren, Karl Hagan Gantz (Julie), Kimberly Dolyniuk White (Ronny), Elizabeth Dolyniuk Lasco (Cris), Megan Diane Dolyniuk, Harrison James Dolyniuk, Randy Reese Dolyniuk and MaryAllan Dolyniuk. Also, surviving him are nine great grandchildren and a large family of nephews and nieces.
He was an Emeritus Faculty member of Augusta State University; a life member of the American Legion, a life member of The Veterans of Foreign Wars, serving in various posts including State quartermaster; Guadalcanal Campaign Veterans Association; The 164th Infantry Association of the US; Life Member of The Fraternal Order of the Elks; Life Member, The Loyal Order of the Moose; and a Fourth Degree Member of The Knights of Columbus. Further he was a member of St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, March 30, 2012 at 11:00 am at St Mary on the Hill Catholic Church with Father Scott Winchell, celebrant. Interment will be at Westover Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Augusta State University, Trinity Hospice, or St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church.
