AUGUSTA. GA--Harvie Jordan Hogan, Jr., 83, beloved husband of the late Nelle Ruth Guill Hogan for 57 years, entered into rest on January 24, 2013. He spent his last season enjoying the fellowship of all his dear friends and watching Alabama football.

Service will be held in the chapel of Thomas Poteet and Son on January 26, 2013 at 3:30 pm with Dr. Donnie Hilliard officiating with Reverend Bobby Renew offering the eulogy. Burial will be in Pierce United Methodist Church Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be all of Coach Hogan’s former players.

Mr. Hogan was born August 2, 1929 in Augusta, GA to the late Fannie Maude and Harvie Hogan. He is a graduate of the Academy of Richmond County. He received his degree in Physical Education from Georgia Teachers College (now Georgia Southern). As a young man, Mr. Hogan was an avid baseball player, having contracts with both the St. Louis Cardinals and the Cincinnati Reds to play minor league baseball. He holds a 21-strikeout record with the Little Ogeechee League. Mr. Hogan followed his professional baseball career with college baseball and a lifetime career as an educator and coach. He was the head coach at Tubman Junior High for many years and forever considered all his players, his “boys”. He coached the semi-professional Augusta Eagles football team where he was named Dixie Football League Coach of the Year in 1969. He was the first Channel 26 Sports Director in 1969-70. Mr. Hogan’s military service included two years in the Army during the Korean War. He graduated from the U.S. Army Command General Staff College and served as an instructor. He retired as a Reserve Lt. Colonel.

Survivors include his daughters, Rebecca Hogan Brady (Chris) of Alexandria, VA and Laurie Hogan Osteen (Chris) of Savannah, GA. He is survived by grandchildren: Katie Osteen (New York, New York), Nick Brady (Nags Head, NC), Sally Osteen (Atlanta, GA) and Kathleen Brady (Alexandria, VA) and numerous nieces and nephews. Other family members include his cherished brother, Willy Hogan and sister‘s-in-law, Mary Lou Hogan and Marian Guill. The family requests that memorials be made to Pierce United Methodist Church at 1441 Jackson Road, Augusta, GA 30909.
