Evans, Ga - Helen Bredenberg Smith, wife of the late James Dean Smith, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 14, 2016 at Brandon Wilde.

Helen was born in Augusta, Ga to John Jay Bredenberg and Helen Brenner Bredenberg. After graduating from Tubman High School for Girls, Helen received her B.A. Degree in Chemistry from Converse College in Spartanburg, SC. She taught science at Langford Junior High School until she married Jim in 1956.

Helen was a member of St Augustines Episcopal Church where she was a Sunday school teacher and served as President and Vice President of the Women of the Church. Helen was a member of the Augusta Richmond County Museum and the Augusta Genealogical Society. Helen loved researching her family history tracing her roots back to the 1500s. She also loved sharing her stories of Augusta history and growing up in Augusta. Other passions of hers were playing bridge, reading, and she especially loved spending time with her many friends at Brandon Wilde.

She is survived by her daughter, Marie Smith Wicker (Ed) of Augusta, Ga. and son, James (Jim) Cudd Smith (Kathy) of Gainesville, Florida; grandchildren, Brenner Wicker McNair (Paul), David Watson Wicker, Elizabeth Chandler Smith, and Prestin Dean Smith; great grandchildren, Addison, Mobley and Caroline McNair. She is also survived by her brother, John Jay Bredenberg (Helen) of Greensboro, NC. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

The family would like to give a special thanks to all of the staff in the Pavillon at Brandon Wilde for the love and support Helen has received during the past 3 years.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 18, 2016 at 2 pm at Brandon Wilde, 4275 Owens Road, Evans, Ga. The family will receive friends following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Aldersgate Prayer Quilt Ministry, 3185 Wheeler Road, Augusta, Ga 30909.
