Helen “Nell” Callahan, Ph.D.
Augusta, GA – Entered into rest Thursday, April 7, 2016, Dr. Helen “Nell” Callahan, age 79.
Dr. Callahan was a native and lifelong resident of Augusta, GA. She is the daughter of Mr. Cornelius Anthony Callahan and Mrs. Nellie Dasher Callahan. Dr. Callahan was a graduate and Valedictorian of Sacred Heart School and Mt. St. Joseph High School. She graduated from Augusta College in 1969 with a Bachelor’s Degree in History and from the University of Georgia in 1970 with a Master’s Degree in History and in 1973 with a Ph.D. in History. Dr. Callahan received many awards including Katherine Checkley Scholar of the English-Speaking Union (Atlanta Chapter) in 1972, the Town and Gown Award, Outstanding Faculty Award and the Distinguished Alumna Award. She worked at Augusta Hearing and Speech Center from 1958 until 1969 as a Coordinator then at Augusta State University from 1972 until 2001 as a Professor of History. Dr. Callahan served on many Boards of Directors including: Sheppard Community Blood Center, Summerville Neighborhood Association, Historic Augusta, Inc., Augusta Hearing and Speech Center, Augusta-Richmond County Historical Association, Widows Home, St. Mary on the Hill Parish Council, Augusta-Richmond County Library, City Council of Augusta Hospital Authority, Augusta College Foundation and Georgia Association of Historians. She was an author of several books including: Yesterday’s Augusta; Augusta: A Partial History; The Story of GIW; Summerville: A Pictorial History; Chapter in Augusta: Key to the Back Countrey, edited by Edward Cashin; and numerous published articles.
Family members include Cousins: Patricia Breland and Catherine McPherson.
A funeral mass will be Thursday, April 21, 2016 at 12:00 Noon at St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Magnolia Cemetery.
