Henry D. Carter

Entered into rest on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, Mr. Henry Darwood Carter, loving husband of Wanda Marie Carter for 59 years.

He is survived by other family members to include his son Jason Henry Carter (Amanda), daughters Jennifer St. Louis (James), Melissa Borders (Ronald); grandchildren Jason Henry Carter II, Ansley Franco, Conner Franco, Macy Baumgartner (Colin), Jackson Borders, Michael Carter, great grandson Parker Borders, numerous nieces and nephews and his best friend Stewart Austin all whom he loved dearly. Mr Carter was preceded in death by his parents Grady and Linnie Carter, his siblings: Mildred Baxley, J.D. Carter, Don Carter, John Carter, his twin sister Doris Crawford and his grandson Blake Franco.

Henry was born in Appling County GA where he grew up on the family farm growing tobacco and cotton. He joined the U.S. Army in 1964 and served in Vietnam. His military service brought him to Augusta, GA in 1979. After giving “20 years to the day” he retired from the Army in 1984. Following his military retirement, he worked as a Life Insurance Agent and then at Farmers Furniture as a salesman and account manager. He was a longtime member of Fleming Baptist Church, where he was a Deacon and member of Messengers Sunday School Class. He cherished his farming background and enjoyed growing a vegetable garden, every year sharing his “crop” with family and friends. His talents were many but the most memorable was that he never met a stranger. He would strike up a conversation with anyone he came across. He simply loved people and the Lord. He continued to witness his faith by giving out a little frog to all that cared for him during his illness explaining that it signified “Faithfully Rely On God” continuing the tradition of his dear friend and Sunday School classmate Merv Jenkins. 

The funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2025 at 2 PM at Fleming Baptist Church in Augusta, GA with Reverand Billy Atkins officiating. Visitation with the family will be on Thursday at 1 PM at the church prior to the service.
