Martinez, GA –Mr. Henry S. Black II, 88, known by family as H.S., entered into rest Tuesday, August 30, 2011. He is preceded in death by his loving wife Juanita H. Black of 58 years, whom he loved and missed dearly. Mr. Black is the son of the late Evelyn Goff Black and the late William B. Black.
Mr. Black, a native of Augusta, attended Richmond Academy until 11th grade during which time he was employed by Harbin’s Florist. In 1941 he was drafted and served during WWII in Manila at which time he was injured and received an honorable discharge. Mr. Black worked for the Augusta Arsenal until employed by the Augusta Post Office as a letter carrier where he retired after 37 years of service in 1984. Henry and Juanita took a very active roll with his 630th Quarter Master Army Reunion for approximately 30 years in Atlanta, Augusta, and Jasper, AL. Mr. Black was very dedicated to his family and church. He continued to work at Resurrection Lutheran Church for over 14 years.
Mr. Black was the first WWII Veteran in the state of Georgia to receive his high school diploma under Bill 172, which was made law in 2002. He was respectfully recognized by Richmond Academy and the Board of Education. Mr. Black is a direct descendant and namesake of his grandfather, Civil War Veteran Henry S. Black who fought in the Battle of Atlanta. He was a lifetime member of the NRA and the Sons of the Confederacy.
Survivors include his daughters: Lynn Black Good (Wayne), Brenda Ann Black Toma; son: Henry S. Black III; and grandchildren: Lauren Ann and Rick Good, Jr.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 2, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at The Lutheran Church of the Resurrection with Pastor David Hunter officiating. Interment will follow at Westover Memorial Park.
