Augusta, GA – Entered into rest Sunday, August 12, 2012, Mr. Hervey Edgar (Herb) Beckham, 77, husband to Mrs. Judy Anne Roberson Beckham.

Mr. Beckham was born in Hartsville, SC on September 20, 1934 to Paul Thurlow Beckham and Leona Culp Beckham. He graduated from St. Johns High School in Darlington, SC in 1951. He attended Spartanburg Junior College on a basketball scholarship and then he attended John Marshall Law School in Atlanta, GA from 1961 until 1962. In 1961 he married Judy Anne Roberson. Mr. Beckham was a member of the Dekalb County Jaycees and the Augusta Jaycees from 1962 until 1964. He served in the National Guard and the US Navy. Mr. Beckham served on the Richmond County Board of Education and the County Commission as President in 1989. He was very proud to serve as an elected Republican and especially to be the first County Commissioner that represented West Augusta. Mr. Beckham also served on the Board at University Hospital as the County Commission representative and on the Richmond County Health Department in 1989. He was a nationally ranked Table Tennis player. He was inducted into the Southern Table Tennis Hall of Fame in 2000. He also won many awards and was the Senior Men’s Champion of the 1999 Georgia Games. He loved golf and spent many happy hours at “the Patch”. Mr. Beckham once got a hole-in-one at Belle Meade Golf Course. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and the love of Judy’s life. Mr. Beckham was most known for his wit, he loved to give nicknames to his family and friends. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Family members in addition to his wife include his daughters: Tracy Meehan, Cathy Harper, Merry Beckham and Dr. Amy Bunk and grandchildren: Leslie Meehan, Weston Meehan, Bryce Meehan, Will Harper, Tara Harper and Clara Bunk and brother Robert C. “Bob” Beckham and wife Susan and many nieces, nephews and extended family.

A visitation will be held Saturday, August 18, 2012 at 4:00 P.M. with a celebration of life service at 5:00 P.M. at Saint Mark United Methodist Church with Dr. Charles Broome officiating.

In lieu of flowers please make donations to Saint Mark United Methodist Church, the Augusta Chapter of the Parkinson’s Association or to the Augusta Chapter of the Heart Association.
