Augusta, GA – After an extended illness, Howard Reeves entered into rest Monday, June 8, 2009, at his residence.
Howard was born in Dearing, GA to the late Eula and Romie Reeves. He has lived in Augusta since the age of seven. He was the loving husband of Evelyn Lowe Reeves.
Howard retired from the Augusta Police Department after 38 years of service. During his latter years with the Department, he was the officer in charge of Community Relations, He devoted a lot of time working in the Richmond County Schools investing in the lives of young people and trying to influence them to avoid involvement in drugs and criminal behavior, and to stay in school and complete their educations. He volunteered for over 25 years with the Richmond County Recreation Department, coaching little league baseball, football and basketball teams. He truly gave of himself to the young people of this community.
Howard worked with the First Presbyterian Church of Augusta for over 25 years as head of their Security Staff, and was affectionately called “Sarge” by the membership. He was a member of Grace Fellowship of Augusta.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Patti Reeves Barnard and her husband Dan; one son: Captain William Howard Reeves and his wife Lara O’Dell Reeves, all of Martinez, GA; and five grandchildren: Joseph Daniel Barnard III, Harrison Reeves Barnard, Lynlee Marie Barnard, William Remmington Reeves, and Emory Victoria Reeves. Three sisters: Inez Edwards of Hephzibah, Jenelle Black of Bluffton, SC and Dale Carver of Charlotte, NC also survive him.
The Funeral service will be held Thursday, June 11, 2009, at 1:00 P.M. at Grace Baptist Fellowship of Augusta, 1735 Sibley Road, Augusta, GA with Rev. Wade Trimmer and Rev. Brian Fields officiating. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Jessie Tarver, William Manecke, Keith Ingram, Daniel Morris, Edward Parker and David Graves. Honorary pallbearers will be Kathy Gilreath and fellow officers at the Augusta Police Department.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Training for Reigning Institute of Disciple Making, c/o of Grace Fellowship of Augusta, 1535 Sibley Road, Augusta, GA 30909.
