Mr. Hugh Alan Campbell

Evans, GA – Entered into rest Monday, April 25, 2016, at his home in Evans, Ga. Mr. Hugh Alan Campbell, 88, was born in Chicago, IL, but relocated with his family to Columbia, SC when he was a teenager. One of the first things he did once his family settled in Columbia was to obtain a paper route delivering daily papers come rain or shine. He sold war stamps to customers on his paper route and received several awards for being a top seller.

After graduating from high school Mr. Campbell enlisted in the United States Marines Corps in 1945 and served 2 ½ years. Not knowing quite what to do with himself after being discharged, he utilized the GI bill to attend the University of South Carolina where he pursued and earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration. After graduating from the University of South Carolina he relocated to Asheville, NC where he served as Chief Internal Auditor for American Enka Corporation and later served as director of accounting systems and procedures for Southern Railway System before coming to Augusta. He joined the Medical College of Georgia in 1968 as Director of Management Services and was promoted to Comptroller in 1971.

Mr. Campbell served as Vice President for business and finance from 1984 until he retired in 1992. During his career at MCG he was co-editor/author of the University System of Georgia’s business procedures manual, “Accounting Procedures and Instruction”. He also served on the University System Advisory Committee, on numerous institutional committees including the Hospital Executive Committee, and on the MCG Foundation Board of Directors. During his career he was active in the community serving as chairman of the budget committee for the CSRA chapter of the United Way for four years and then as chairman of the United Way board. He was also chairman of the Girls Inc. board. Mr. Campbell always enjoyed spending time with his family watching a Braves game, a golf match or a good movie on TV. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren whether it was watching a school football game, baseball game, band concerts, taking them to the park or just discussing their day’s activities and hearing about what was going on with them. He always had time for all and ear to listen. He was a member of Lewis Memorial United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Julian Campbell and Mary Lyle Campbell, his sisters: Ann Campbell Gibbons and Grace Campbell Arculis. Survivors include his wife Pauline (Polly) Campbell of Evans, GA; his daughters: Gail Hendrix of Aiken, SC and Robin (Robert) Stansell of Winder, GA; two step-sons: Phillip (Leslie) Peavler of Evans, GA, Christopher (Denise) Peavler of Martinez, GA; grandchildren: Miles (Elizabeth) Hendrix, Ryan (Nicole) Stansell, Kelli Stansell, Caitlin Peavler, Matthew Peavler, Merritt Peavler, Mitchell Peavler, Tillman Peavler; great grandsons: Jett Hendrix, and Tuck Hendrix and one great granddaughter: Blakely Grace Stansell.
