Augusta, GA – Beloved husband of Kira, loving father of Oleg, proud new grandfather of Isabelle Ekaterina, world-renowned sculling coach, mentor, role model and good friend to many, Igor Grinko, passed away on Tuesday, March 18, 2014, in Augusta, Georgia after a long and valiant battle with cancer. With his passing come many broken hearts from around the world as Igor was beloved by his many family members, friends and athletes.

Born in Vilnius Lithuania, “Igor” enjoyed a long and successful career as one of the best rowing coaches in the world. He was the United States National Team Sculling Coach from 1991 to 2000 and, with that title, brought honor to the United States and worldwide recognition to Augusta, Georgia, which was the home for the US National Sculling Team for many years. Igor was also a national team coach for Ukraine, the former Soviet Union, Estonia and the National Coach for China. He coached his athletes to many World Championship and Olympic medals and is one of the most decorated coaches in the sport of rowing.

Mr. Grinko is survived by Kira, his wife of 41 years, his son Oleg (Stacey), his baby granddaughter Isabelle Ekaterina; brother: Stanislav Grinko; brothers-in-law: Alexsey & Ivan; sisters-in-law: Faina & Klaudija; nephews: Vadim, Sergey & Nikolay; and nieces: Natalia, Marina & Elena.

A funeral service for Igor will be held at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 953 Telfair St., Augusta, GA 30901, on Saturday March 22, 2014 at 11:00 AM followed by his burial at Westover Memorial Park. A reception for family and friends to “Celebrate Igor” will be held at Augusta Rowing Club (The Boathouse, 101 Riverfront Dr., Augusta, GA 30901) from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 5:00 until 7:00 PM at Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors, 214 Davis Rd. A Trisagion (Vigil Service) will take place from 5:00 to 5:15 PM led by Fr. Vasile Bitere.
