Augusta, GA – Entered into rest on Tuesday, November 29, 2022 at her residence, Mrs. Imogene Long, 94, wife of the late William “Bill” Wendell Long. Other family members include her daughter: Becky Leatherbury (Colin); sons: Bruce E. Long (Jenny); the late David W. Long (Jenny); 19 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
Imogene, or Jean, as she preferred to be called, was born and grew up in Belleville, Illinois. When she was in her late teens her uncle invited her to move in with his family in Indianapolis. Apparently excited about a change of scenery, she accepted. Jean met her future husband Bill Long at Broadway Methodist Church where they were later married. She and Bill lived their whole lives together in Indianapolis where church family was a central part of their life. They always sang in the choir and were actively involved in the life of the church.
Jean also loved her family. She was a stay-at-home Mom with their 3 children for many years until the oldest reached high school. Bill built a beauty salon in the basement of their home so she could earn money to help put all of the children through college. After the children married, the grandchildren came along quickly. Christmases at her house were full of noisy, joyful children running and playing together in Grandma and Grandpa’s house.
Jean loved people and she had many close friends. She loved to have people in her home for dinner and fellowship. Jean mentored younger women in their walk with the Lord, volunteered in various ways at church, and later was active in the senior group of active adults. After Bill passed away she lived in a few senior living homes where she continued to make new friends. Jean loved Jesus and was concerned for the salvation of her new friends and found many opportunities to share the gospel with them and bring them to church with her.
As age began to take a toll on her life; she needed more help and two years ago Bruce and Jenny welcomed her into their Augusta, Georgia home where they cared for her for the remainder of her life. After enjoying a wonderful Thanksgiving with family, she suffered a major stroke on Friday, November 25th from which she never recovered. Jean is missed by her family and many friends, but she was looking forward to her heavenly home. We rejoice with her that she has exchanged her worn out body for a new imperishable body and is now face to face with the Lord forever!
The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 15 from 10-12, followed by a memorial service at 12 noon at College Park Church, 2606 West 96th Street, Indianapolis, 46268 with Pastor Don Bartemus officiating. Interment will be in Washington Park Cemetery.
