Augusta, GA-Irby W. Fleming, age 90, beloved husband of Betty Crim Fleming, entered into rest Wednesday, August 18, 2010, at Kentwood Nursing Home.
Mr. Fleming was a native of Grand Junction, TN, where he was the youngest child of the late Walter and Allie Fleming. After graduating from Grand Junction High School, he worked for the Illinois Central Railroad before entering the United States Army in early 1942. He completed Officer Candidate School and served in the 60th Combat Engineers Battalion, 35th Division. He participated in five major campaigns in the European theater: Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge), Rhineland, and Central Europe. After WWII, he worked as an accountant for the Veterans Administration for thirty-six years retiring in 1982. He served in the United States Army Reserves retiring as a Lt. Colonel. He attended George Washington University, Northwestern University (Chicago campus), and graduated from then Augusta College at age 50 with a bachelor's degree in Business Administration. He was a member of the American Legion, Association of Government Accountants, and Reserve Officers Association.
After meeting during WWII, he married Betty Crim Fleming April 19, 1947 in Arlington, VA. They moved many times in his career and enjoyed traveling and golf during their retirement. They lived in Augusta several times, most recently returning in 1997. Each time they were active members of Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church, where he especially enjoyed the prayer and fellowship of the Men's Friday Morning Prayer Breakfast.
Surviving family members in addition to his wife include daughters: Linda J. Fleming of Augusta, Catherine Fleming Moody and husband Kenneth of Augusta; two grandchildren: Janet Moody Reinking and husband Mark of Atlanta, David C. Moody and wife Melissa of Naples, FL; and one great grandchild, Elijah Moody. He is survived by his brother Herron S. Fleming and his wife Edith of Black Mountain, NC. He is also survived by a nephew, two nieces, and a great niece. He was predeceased by his brother Julian R. Fleming of Jackson, TN and his sister Hazel Fleming DeMore of Brownsville, TN.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 28th, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. at Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church located at Johns Road and Walton Way with Dr. Leslie Holmes and the Rev. R. Paul Sherwood officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at Arlington National Cemetery. Pallbearers will be George Dean, Bill Denny, Jim Harrover, Sonny Reece, Bob Ross, and David Whittaker. Honorary pallbearers are members of the Men's Friday Morning Prayer Breakfast.
Following the funeral service, there will be visitation with the family and a reception (light refreshments) in the church fellowship hall.
